COPHO was organized in 1989 so that Hypnosis Organizations could come together in "Unity," each on an equal basis, with each able to cast one vote per organization.
Originally, there were thirteen Charter Members gathered together to present a consistent and positive image of hypnosis to the public. Some tasks were to standardize titling, and to create a National Certification, put together by all COPHO members. The members were to collectively set standards and structures for themselves as a group to influence legislation for the benefit of all, and to create licensing in fifty states.
