Hypnosis is a special state of consciousness, induced by the skilled application of suggestion, which renders a person more responsive to the techniques of hypnotherapy.
When they think of hypnosis, most people remember stage shows or movies they have seen, and the silly, or bad, things that happened to those people who were hypnotized. In the case of stage hypnosis, the goal was entertainment. The people hypnotized allowed themselves to go along with the suggestions of the stage hypnotist for the fun of it, because they trusted the hypnotist. In the case of most movies, the goal was also entertainment, but usually by creating a mood of fear or suspense. The actors only pretended to be hypnotized. It is not possible to make a person do something, whether it is something silly or something evil, against their will with hypnosis.
Hypnotherapy is the use of suggestion-based techniques to alleviate mental and psychical distress and suffering, change undesirable habits, and facilitate personal growth and development.
Hypnotherapists are people who study hypnotherapy, usually for hundreds of hours, and take qualifying tests, so they can help people overcome distress and suffering.
